Hi!
My name is Tom and I handle the day-to-day operation of the club. I try to keep things running smoothly and I’m responsible for communication, organising club events, meetings, trips and socials.

What do you most enjoy about climbing?
It’s the only thing I’ve found that seems to perfectly balance the physical and mental aspect. I love the personal challenge mixed with the social and supportive side of it all. It’s also great getting to spend time in some beautiful, remote and unique areas. I also love teaching and enjoy helping people learn new skills, face new fears and become independent climbers.

How did you get into climbing?
In 2015, I lived in London and got a taste for climbing by occasionally visiting bouldering centres with mates and getting outdoors a few times with the Brixton Climbers Club. However, it was in 2016, whilst I was teaching out in Melbourne that I really started getting hooked. I joined a local climbing club where we would drive out to Arapiles most weekends. I would get dragged up many amazing routes by climbers who were patient and kind enough to show me what trad climbing was and how to stay safe. Since then, I learnt how to lead, completed the ‘Rock Climber Instructor’ qualification and have been lucky enough to climb in many great places. I moved back to Jersey in 2017 and got involved with the club here and realised what an amazing and special place Jersey is for climbing!

What do you like to do when not climbing?
Strum guitar/ukulele, play board games, read a book, cycle my bike, get dragged on some type of silly adventure other than climbing that I’m under-prepared for.

Hi, I’m Shayne. I keep track of the club’s finances, manage memberships and maintain the website.

What do you most enjoy about climbing?
My favourite style of climbing is bouldering and I love the minutia of it; the subtle technical details that make the difference between falling flat on your backside and sending a problem you’ve been working on all day. You can push yourself to the limit and climb things you wouldn’t have thought possible.

How did you get into climbing?
I had never considered climbing as a hobby until 2009 when my best friend invited me out to join him. The satisfaction of getting to the top of a cliff and thinking “I just climbed that!” had me hooked. Before long, with some invaluable help from friends and club members, I bought my own gear and started leading for myself. My first trip to Font was in 2012 where I discovered the world of bouldering and I’ve never looked back!

What do you like to do when not climbing?
My other big hobby is skydiving and when I’m not climbing or jumping, I chill out and play video games.

I stumbled upon a bouldering video and looked up climbing options in Jersey straight away. I found the club and convinced Jasmine to join me. We were both hooked straight away.

What do you most enjoy about climbing?

Climbing has shown me that I am capable of much more than I may think – physically, mentally and socially. I love being surprised by my body and mind, it feels healthy for the soul.

I am grateful for the climbing community, both in Jersey and worldwide. I have experienced a strong culture of acceptance and encouragement, at every level. I love how so many experienced climbers not only honour tradition but enjoy teaching beginners and helping others develop their skills.

I really love becoming obsessed with a particular route. Especially one at Langford that comes with the countdown to send it before it gets reset!

How did you get into climbing?

I joined the club at Langford as a complete beginner at the end of 2022. I was trying to find ways to make Jersey feel bigger. I was so clueless, I remember telling Tom I didn’t realise I would need a partner to top rope with…

I tried a bit of trad (thank you to everyone who patiently guided me!), but gravitated more towards bouldering. I moved to Australia in 2024 where I lived up the road from a huge bouldering gym, which was really cool. I then decided to get back on the ropes and booked to go to Koh Tao in Thailand to climb. I had to learn to lead in a hurry, when I met the mentor-of-dreams on Facebook. Mike Law AKA The Claw, a legend who bolted loads of routes across the Blue Mountains and elsewhere in Australia back in the day. He drove us to some really cool crags around Sydney, some down small lanes in quiet cul-de-sacs leading to deep wilderness. I went on to lead at some amazing jungle crags in Koh Tao with KTCC.

I am now back in Jersey and whilst I do yearn for the boulder, I am hoping to focus on improving my trad and rope skills and finally go on a club trip!

What do you like to do when not climbing?

I love cycling, singing and playing guitar, gardening, going for a dance, being outdoors, just being!

Favourite local crag?

I feel like I say ‘I actually think this is my favourite crag’ at every crag. I love Portelet because of the many different areas with varied climbing styles and types of landscape.

What do you most enjoy about climbing?
I like pushing myself mentally and physically, testing my limits. Climbing can be nerve wracking but when your in the ‘flow zone’ it is all absorbing and provides immense satisfaction on a very base level. The ultimate ‘type 2’ fun, without a doubt.

Planning trips, researching routes and everything coming together on some amazing climbs with epic views is very rewarding. Climbing gives the perfect excuse to travel to remote places, go camping, unplug and be amongst the mountains. Climb, BBQ, beers – repeat.

Whilst I love big mountains, we’re so lucky with Jersey’s crags, which are never too busy and allow a ‘refreshing’ dip in the ocean afterwards.

How did you get into climbing?
I’ve been getting dragged up mountains in the Pyrenees by my Dad from a young age. This culminated in my first exposure to snow and ice, and an intro to Alpinism which turned into an epic.

After this my brother and I decided we needed to do it right and we embarked on some Alpine training in Chamonix valley, bagging our first 4000m peak.

I soon realised I needed to improve my rock climbing skills to push my mountaineering and joined the JRCC shortly after. I had no idea that Jersey had so many amazing crags on its hidden coastlines and fell in love with rock climbing as much as I had Mountaineering.

What do you like to do when not climbing?
Running, hiking, paddleboarding, weightlifting and exploring places with my boy of 3!

What do you most enjoy about climbing?
For me, climbing is as much about adventure, learning, mental focus, trust and friendship as it is a physical sport. I love that I can experience so many different emotions like nervousness, excitement, satisfaction or relief by completing just one lead climb. Reliving it all with your partner afterwards or exchanging experiences of that route with other people who have climbed it as well. I also enjoy that climbing takes me to some amazing locations and gets me outdoors more.

How did you get into climbing?
I moved to Jersey in November 2018 and joined the JRCC as a complete beginner. I attended the winter indoor sessions, where I was taught how to belay and other basic skills. I then completed the JRCC top rope anchors course in spring 2019 and spent the summer top roping outdoors while learning the basics of lead climbing along the way. With the help of other experienced club members, I then tentatively completed my first lead climb in November 2019 and have been hooked on trad climbing ever since, hitting Jersey’s amazing sea cliffs as much as possible. I became a JRCC committee member in July 2020.

What do you like to do when not climbing?
I like getting outdoors exploring our beautiful island, skipping/jump rope, snowboarding and listening to music.

What do you most enjoy about climbing?
As someone who is pretty scared of heights, I love the way that climbing gives me the space to push myself out of my comfort zone and learn ways to stay focussed and calm in uncomfortable situations. Climbing shows me that I can do hard things when I quieten my mind and try my absolute best. I also love seeing places from the perspective of a climber – especially the stunning coastal views here in Jersey.

How did you get into climbing?
I saw a friend posting photos of himself climbing rocks in Jersey a couple of years ago and I thought it looked cool, so I asked how he got into it. He introduced me to the club and myself and my partner tagged along to a club night. We figured it would be a fun way for us to make time for eachother after having our baby…I was hooked ever since I climbed Beauport Gully Wall in my adidas trainers. It became a deep obsession for a while, I think I watched ‘Free Solo’ a million times and practiced tying knots every night for weeks, until now when I think I love climbing a healthier amount…I love the challenges, supportive friends and opportunities climbing brings and I have definitely unlocked a life-long love.

What do you like to do when not climbing?
I love hanging out with my daughter, gardening, growing flowers, painting, creating & connecting with nature.
